🍂 Fall Into Better Health: Chiropractic Tips for a Healthy Autumn

Fall is here on Long Island! The cooler temperatures, changing leaves, football games, pumpkin picking, and busy school schedules make this one of our favorite times of year. But fall also brings seasonal activities that can leave your body feeling a little more sore and stiff than usual.
At Islip Chiropractic, we want to help you enjoy everything autumn has to offer while keeping your body moving and feeling its best.
🍁 Be Smart About Fall Yard Work
Raking leaves, cleaning up the yard, putting away patio furniture, and preparing for winter can be a workout!
When raking, switch sides periodically instead of repeatedly twisting in the same direction. Bend through your knees when lifting bags of leaves, keep heavier objects close to your body, and break larger jobs into shorter sessions.
And remember—just because it’s yard work doesn’t mean you don’t need to warm up first!
🎃 Watch Your Back While Pumpkin Picking
A day at the pumpkin patch can quickly turn into lifting and carrying some surprisingly heavy pumpkins!
Instead of bending at your waist and reaching forward, get closer to the pumpkin, bend your knees, and use your legs to help you stand. If something is particularly heavy, ask for help rather than trying to carry it yourself.
🏈 Weekend Warrior? Give Your Body Time to Recover
Fall is a great time for running, hiking, recreational sports, and outdoor workouts. But going from sitting most of the week to being extremely active on the weekend can sometimes lead to muscle soreness and joint discomfort.
Gradually increase your activity, stay hydrated, warm up before exercise, and give your body adequate recovery time.
💻 Don’t Forget About Posture
With school back in full swing and many adults spending hours at computers, fall often means more time sitting.
Change positions throughout the day. Get up, walk around, stretch, and give your neck and back a break from prolonged sitting and screen time.
For kids and teens, backpacks matter too! Encourage them to use both shoulder straps and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.
💧 Keep Drinking Water—even When It’s Cooler
It’s easy to remember your water bottle during a hot Long Island summer, but hydration is still important once temperatures drop.
Keep water nearby throughout the day, especially if you’re exercising or spending time outdoors.
🦴 Make Your Spine Part of Your Fall Wellness Routine
You don’t have to wait until something hurts to pay attention to how your body is moving.
Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal system and can help address joint restrictions, mobility, stiffness, and discomfort. Your chiropractor can also help identify movement and postural habits that may be placing unnecessary stress on your body.
🍂 Make This a Healthy Fall!
Whether you’re raking leaves, cheering from the sidelines, heading to the pumpkin patch, or simply enjoying a beautiful fall walk, take a little time to care for the body that carries you through it all.
