Healthy Travels: How to Keep Your Body Feeling Great All Summer Long

Your best vacation starts with a healthy spine and nervous system.
Your best vacation starts with a healthy spine and nervous system.

Summer is rapidly approaching and for many of us is the season for adventure. Whether you’re heading to the beach, taking a road trip, visiting family, or exploring a new destination, travel is one of the best parts of the season. While vacations are meant to help us recharge, changes in routine, long hours of sitting, disrupted sleep schedules, and busy itineraries can sometimes place extra stress on the body.

One of the best ways to prepare for travel, and recover from it, is by making chiropractic care part of your vacation wellness plan. Getting adjusted before and after your trip can help keep your body functioning at its best, allowing you to enjoy your travels with more energy, comfort, a stronger immune system and ease.

Before you leave, consider preparing your body for the physical demands of travel. Just as you plan your route, pack your bags, and make reservations, it’s important to think about your health and well-being. A chiropractic adjustment before your trip can help improve mobility, reduce tension, support proper nervous system function, and ensure your body is moving as efficiently as possible. When your body is functioning well before you leave, you’re better equipped to handle long car rides, flights, unfamiliar beds, and active vacation schedules.

If you’re traveling by car, be mindful of how much time you’re spending seated. Long periods of sitting can place stress on your neck, shoulders, and lower back. Adjust your seat so you maintain good posture, take breaks every couple of hours to stretch and walk around, and stay hydrated throughout your drive. Even a few minutes of movement can help keep your muscles and joints feeling refreshed.

Flying presents its own challenges. Spending hours in cramped seating can lead to stiffness and fatigue. Try to get up and walk periodically, perform simple stretches while seated, and drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to support your body’s overall function and energy levels while traveling. Most people should shoot to drink half of their body weight in ounces of water daily. If you are unsure what your goal should be discuss it with either Dr. Laura or Dr. Diana at your next appointment.

Another common source of travel-related discomfort is luggage. Heavy bags and awkward lifting can strain your back and shoulders. Whenever possible, use rolling luggage and remember to bend your knees and keep bags close to your body when lifting. A little extra attention to body mechanics can go a long way in reducing unnecessary stress on your body.

While vacation often means taking a break from your normal routine, your body still benefits from regular movement. Walking on the beach, swimming, hiking, sightseeing, or even taking a short morning stroll can help keep your muscles active and your joints moving well. The goal isn’t to maintain your normal workout schedule, it’s simply to keep your body moving and engaged.

Don’t overlook the importance of rest and recovery. Travel can be exciting, but it can also be physically demanding. Prioritize quality sleep, listen to your body’s signals, and build some downtime into your schedule. Taking care of yourself during your trip can help you return home feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.

When your vacation comes to an end, a chiropractic adjustment can be just as important as the one you received before you left. Travel often places physical demands on the body that aren’t immediately noticeable. Hours spent sitting, carrying luggage, sleeping in different beds, and participating in activities outside your normal routine can create stress and tension throughout the body and contribute to spinal misalignments or subluxations. A post-vacation adjustment can help restore proper movement, relieve accumulated tension, and support your body’s ability to adapt as you transition back into your everyday schedule.

At Islip Chiropractic, we believe chiropractic care isn’t just about addressing pain, it’s about helping your body function at its highest potential. By scheduling an adjustment before and after your trip, you’re giving your body the support it needs to travel well, recover well, and enjoy all that summer has to offer.
